Quick and Easy Panel Quilt

Let the panel fabric do the work!

Find a panel you like - it will go in the white squares......

Find a fabric that goes with it - if you're going to hand quilt use something fairly plain and quilt a really nice motif in this square. If you're going for more utilitarian quilting pick a busier fabric...... use this fabric for the blue squares.

Pick a size..... Figure out how big you want the quilt to be when finished. (hint - I try to make my tops a few inches smaller than the batting I intend to use.)

Remembering that you will have 10 to 20" of border..... figure out how many blocks you need...... For instance if you want the top to be 70" x 90" before borders..... and your panels are 10" (10 1/2" unfinished) .... you will need 7 across x 9 down = 63 blocks. Divide this in half to determine how many panels you need... (you need one more panel than alternating block). To make it balanced you want to have an odd number of rows across and down. You can adjust your border size to allow for this.

Cut the alternating blocks the same size as the panels. Sew them together in rows... and then sew the rows together. If you are using several panel sets you may want to lay out the blocks before sewing to make sure you get a balanced distribution of the panels.

Add a thin border around the outside..... An inch is good..... use a fabric that compliments your blocks and contrasts with the alternating blocks and the border fabric.

Add a border whatever width you need to get the finished size you want..... Pick a fabric that goes with the panels - a large print or border fabric would work well. Either run it all the way around or use appropriate sized squares in contrasting fabric in the corners.

Now quilt it, bind it (the same fabric as the inner border would work) and you're done.
