Nine Patch and Snowball

As shown the quilt is about 69" x 81". You can make it larger by adding more borders or even up to queen size by adding extra rows.

The 9 inch (finished) squares are set on point. This works as a three colour quilt or an absolute scrap quilt.... or anything in between. You can use the snowball blocks for signatures, picture fabrics, photographs, embroidery, or some feature quilting.

If you're doing this as shown you'll need 12 - 3 1/2" wide blue strips (about 1 1/3 yds),
and 15 - 3 1/2" red strips (about 1 2/3 yds). You'll also need 12 - 9 1/2" squares of background fabric for the snowballs, 4 - 14" squares for the setting triangles (cut each diagonally twice to make four triangles), and 2- 7 1/4" squares for the corner triangles (cut diagonally once to make four triangles in total), and borders. (about 3 1/2 yards).

Sew the strips together to make four blue/red/blue sets, and two red/blue/red sets. Press seams toward the blue.
Cut these into 3 1/2" wide -three block units. Sew together into nine-patches.
Cut 48 - 3 1/2" squares from the remaining red strips. Draw a diagonal on the back of each of them.
Place these squares in each corner of the 9 1/2" background squares and sew on the diagonals. Press back, trim the excess fabric, to make the snowballs.
Following the quilt illustration, alternate the ninepatch and snowball blocks and adding setting and corner triangles as needed, lay out the quilt.
Sew the blocks in each diagonal row together. Start at one corner (one ninepatch with corner and two setting triangles in row) and progress to opposite diagonal corner). The second row would be setting triangle, ninepatch, snowball, ninepatch. setting).
Join the rows together, press and measure.
The top should now be about 51 1/2" x 64 1/4". Add background fabric borders as necessary to make length and width divisable by 3 (plus 1/2 " seam allowance). You can make this border (and therefore the quilt) bigger or smaller depending on your preferences. For instance you could add 1 1/2" borders (2" strips) to the top and bottom and 1 1/8" (cut 1 5/8") strips to the sides. Or you could make this border wider - 3" (cut 3 1/2") and 2 5/8" (cut 3 1/8").... for instance.
Sew the rest of the strips together in contrasting pairs to make two block units. Join these with the leftover 3 block units from the nine patches to make the border rows.
Add another background border.
